Animation is an illusion of motion created by rapidly displaying sequence images. The word Animation is a form of animate, which means to bring to life. It is also considered as a form of art. Animation is time consuming and costly to produce. It’s the only art form which stretches the imagination to get a laugh. Persistence of vision is the physics behind this where the eyes can be fooled to see continuous movement.
On the basis of dimension we categories animation into two, 2D and 3D. 2D animation is also called Traditional animation. In this every movements and facial expressions are manually drawn, and then transferred onto film or onto digital media. The animators drawings are transferred onto a transparent acetate sheets called cells. This is why it is also called cell animation. Traditional animation became easier in 21th century with the use computers, in which these drawings are been scan into or directly drawn into the computer. There is much software for 2D animation like Adobe Flash, Toon Boom Studio and Anime Studio etc.
Computer Animation is a method of creating successive frames using a rendering machine. Animators considered computers as a very powerful and useful part of their animation systems; this introduced the 3 dimensional animations. In this animators design the characters using software. The digitally sculptured model is then rigged (adding born to the character). These characters are then given movements as the same as in traditional animation but here animator don’t want to draw instead they create poses. After that it is added with cloth, hair, textures etc. which comes under 3D dynamics. Toy Story (1995) is the first feature length film to be done completely in 3D graphics.
Stop animation or stop motion animation is another method of animation where the animators make objects move on their own. Puppetry is one of the most used frame-to-frame animation types. Some famous movies that are animated via stop motion are The Dinosaur and the Missing Link, The Lost World and The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.
Animation begins with story boarding throughout the character design to the end of production, drawing skill is essential in animation. Animation drawing is a balance between flat image and solid shapes. The most important five aspects of drawing that animators must understand are gesture, weight and balance, solidity, proportion and silhouetting. Besides that a good animation should have a good visual eye, storytelling ability, sense of timing and an understanding about motion, size, ratio and perspective.
The first and foremost thing to be done in animation is story boarding. Story boarding is a rough frame of scene which shows its layout, composition etc. Mean while characters and background layout will be set. According to this storyboard and recorded dialogue animator animate the scenes. These frames are colored and combined with the back ground to become scene. After all the drawings have been filmed, the dialogue is added. Sometimes the film is timed properly by some simple editing to become a fully finished animation film.
