TASK 3: SEMIOTIC THEORY (VT 2006 VISUAL COMMUNICATION AND CULTURAL MEANING)
As a group research the theory of, and find your own examples of semiotics. This task is short to allow you maximum time to develop an understanding of this complex area of cultural understanding. Use the group to organize discussion sessions on this topic. Use the crit. to present the process.
From this task , I know what difference between signifier and signified ? What is SEMIOTIC THEORY ?
What is SEMIOTIC THEORY ?
Based on “semiosis,” the relationship between a sign, an object, and a meaning. The sign represents the object, or referent, in the mind of an interpreter. “Interpretant” refers to a sign that serves as the representation of an object. Signs can be verbal (words) or nonverbal.
According to C. Morris, people are interpreters of signs. Signs have three factors that guide interpretation:
The DESIGNATIVE aspect directs to interpreter to a particular object.
The APPRAISIVE aspect highlights object qualities, enabling evaluation.
The PRESCRIPTIVE aspect directs one to respond in specific ways.
Semiotics - Signs and Meanings
According to Morris, human action involves signs and meanings in three ways:
· The perception stage - the person becomes aware of a sign.
· The manipulation stage - the person interprets the sign and decides how to respond to it.
· The consummation stage - the person responds.
Semiotics - Signs and Values
Three signs ands values connections:
· Detachment - the person or system maintains autonomy (independence).
· Dominance - The person or system takes precedence over, controls, or dominates another person or system.
· Dependence - The person or system needs, is controlled by, or dominated by another person or system.
Signs, Symbols, Semiotics
· Every sign has meaning and the potential for multiple meanings.
· Multiple meanings are socially and culturally influenced.
· Signs have both denotative and connotative meanings.
What difference between signifier and signified ?
Signifier
The signifier is the pointing finger, the word, the sound-image.
A word is simply a jumble of letters. The pointing finger is not the star. It is in the interpretation of the signifier that meaning is created.
Signified
The signified is the concept, the meaning, the thing indicated by the signifier. It need not be a 'real object' but is some referent to which the signifier refers.
The thing signified is created in the perceiver and is internal to them. Whilst we share concepts, we do so via signifiers.
Whilst the signifier is more stable, the signified varies between people and contexts.
The signified does stabilize with habit, as the signifier cues thoughts and images.
The relationship chart of signifier and signified
For example :
When you see the dark clouds , you will think of rain coming soon . The dark clouds is signifier . The rain is signified .
Our research the sign:
Malaysia flag
India food use banana leaf instead of bowl
We choose present:
1. Peach blossom

Cultural
Task 4 : cultural research (VT 2006 VISUAL COMMUNICATION AND CULTURAL MEANING)
Last week we went to KLCC to observed some cultures. So I chose to take photos to record these cultural.
For example : Tourism Culture , Deepavali Culture and selfie Culture ect.
Tourism Culture :
Travel allows us to see something more . They will get lots of different cultures through their tourism .
Show pic :
Deepavali culture:
Deepavali is a national public holiday in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Mauritius, Fiji, Malaysia and Singapore. The Sanskrit word Deepavali means an array of lights. As the knowledge of Sanskrit diminished, the name was popularly modified to Diwali, especially in northern India.

selfie culture:
With the popularity of digital cameras as well as Internet users network applications, the self-timer phenomenon spread also in the majority of Internet users, but self-timer what is the personality of the show or a vulgar behavior? I think Self-timer shot for yourself, watch yourself from different angles.
Show pic:
I choose to do a series of deepavali culture poster, because i want to more people can truly understand deepavali.

Animation
How can make my background is prominent and easy to understand?
First i think my background is too simple so it is not easy to understand and not prominent. So i need to make some changes in my background, for example colors change, increase the detail in the background.
How do i give more personality?
Don't follow others blindly, i should have own style but use google search to look at some other people's animated backgrounds do some reference.

Analog Vs Digital
Analog
Analog Printing is an art form, and it means that it is completely done manually. It does not require the use of any electronic devices. Paintings, sketching, sculpturing, typesetting, posters, graffiti etc are all examples of Analog Printing. It is referred to some as handmade art forms. Every artwork starts in analog method even though it ends up in computer, it's the base for all art. Analog Printing requires a lot of effort and is time consuming. The results can be inconsistent as well. On the other hand, because of its inconsistency, each piece of manually handled work has its own character. Analog Printing is not recommended for mass produced products.

Digital
Digital Printing refers to the artworks that are made with the use of any digital media. Since the rise of computer use, this method has become more and more popular, and is now widely available for the public. Digital Printing requires a computer, the software needed, such as Photoshop and Illustrator, and a printer to produce. It is suitable for commercial purposes and mass produced products because of its efficiency and consistency. One who obtains the knowledge of how the program works can produce hundreds of the same image within minutes with the help of technology. Artworks such as 3D animation, digital paintings, advertising, business cards, posters, etc are all considered Digital Art.
The images below is created by an artist who uses computer technology to accomplish the artwork. This method is faster and ends up with more perfection.

Now we are going to compare the analog and digital methods of creating a poster. A poster is an extremely common medium to advertise for films, theater, competitions, theatrical performances and other activities. To create a poster one can combine both the use of analog and digital methods. The early stages are usually through analog method.
Analog Method:
-Come up with an idea through brainstorming and sketches
-Choose a canvas, then draw and paint the elements by hand.
Digital Method:
-Scan the image onto the computer and use programs such as Illustrator, Photoshop, and In-Design to correct mistakes, to create typesetting.
- At the end save the file and print it out using a printer, either with a jet ink printer or laser printer, and this is how a poster is created with a combined use of Analog and Digital method.

Self Evaluation
I don't think this task is easy for me. Actually, I spent a lot of time to do it. In my point of view I can get a good mark. However, when i show my work to some of my friends and classmate they say tere is still some problems, so I have to correct little by little until im satisfied.According to the evaluation and my work quality I can give 55 - 60%, its ok, but not perfect.
